Description:	Background: The qualitative methodology has become relevant in the last decades as a response to cover the knowledge gaps left by the positivist model and the quantitative methodology. In addition, it offers other perspectives in the study of the phenomena that are investigated in the health sciences. This article aims to present the elements that a qualitative research protocol should include. Seven sections are described, including in each the sections that comprise it: problem statement, justification, theoretical framework, objectives, materials and methods, analysis and ethical considerations. In conclusion, qualitative research seeks to interpret reality through subjective data that in quantitative methods are not considered. Although the elements of this type of protocols can change from the perspective of one author or another, the research process must be carried out with methodological rigor and cover the minimum indispensable elements that have been established in consensus, to ensure that the study is of quality. La metodología cualitativa ha cobrado relevancia en las últimas décadas como una respuesta para cubrir los vacíos de conocimientos que dejan el modelo positivista y la metodología cuantitativa, y ofrece otras perspectivas en el estudio de los fenómenos que se investigan en las ciencias de la salud. El presente artículo tiene como objetivo presentar los elementos que debe incluir un protocolo de investigación cualitativo. Se describen siete secciones, incluyendo en cada una sus componentes: planteamiento del problema, justificación, marco teórico, objetivos, metodología, análisis y consideraciones éticas. En conclusión, la investigación cualitativa busca interpretar la realidad a través de los datos subjetivos que en los métodos cuantitativos no se consideran. Aunque los elementos de este tipo de protocolos pueden cambiar desde la perspectiva de un autor u otro, el proceso de investigación debe llevarse a cabo con rigor metodológico y cubrir los elementos mínimos indispensables que se han establecido en consenso, para garantizar que el estudio sea de calidad.
