Description:	Systemic lupus erythematosus is a systemic autoimmune disease that is characterized by the production of antinuclear antibodies by plasma cells. Although its pathogenesis is really complex, there are a lot of investigations that have contributed to get more information about the genetic factors that turn a person susceptible to have the disease. Several mechanisms that include B and T cells hyper-reactivity, polymorphisms in receptors involved in the activation of the immune system, abnormal cytokine levels, inappropriate handling of cellular debris and dysfunction in negative selection of lymphocytes, act together to create an adequate immunologic environment in which the disease can be triggered. El lupus eritematoso sistémico, es una enfermedad autoinmune que se caracteriza por la producción de anticuerpos antinucleares por las células plasmáticas.Aunque la patogénesis de la enfermedad es muy compleja, muchas investigaciones han arrojado información acerca de los factores genéticos que vuelven a una persona susceptible a padecer la patología. Mecanismos que involucran hiperreactividad tanto de los linfocitos B como de los linfocitos T, así como polimorfismos en varios receptores involucrados en la activación del sistema inmune, niveles anormales de citocinas, defectos en la eliminación de detritos celulares y anormalidades en la selección negativa de los linfocitos, se relacionan para crear un ambiente inmunológico adecuado en el que se pueda desarrollar la enfermedad.
