Description:	Mexico’s current education policy calls for the teaching and promotion of national indigenous languages at all levels. Their teaching is mounted on the existing public system, which has been severely criticized for its debatable results. However, at the higher level, some institutions have been created that include these subjects, such as the intercultural universities. In this paper, we review the achievements in the teaching of Purhépecha at the Intercultural Indigenous University of Michoacán (UIIM), Mexico, from 2007 to 2021. We examine education in general, the actors and processes from the perspective of social anthropology and include interviews with teachers and a survey of graduate students. The results are certainly not unique to this institution. It is approached critically without the intention of pointing at culprits, but rather to propose improvements in processes and methods. La actual política educativa de México exige la enseñanza y promoción de las lenguas indígenas nacionales en todos los niveles. Su enseñanza se monta en el sistema público existente, que ha recibido severas críticas por sus discutibles resultados. Sin embargo, en el nivel superior se crearon algunas instituciones que comprenden esas materias, son las universidades interculturales. En este documento revisamos los logros en la enseñanza del purhépecha en la Universidad Intercultural Indígena de Michoacán (UIIM), México, del año 2007 al 2021. Revisamos la educación en general, los actores y procesos desde la antropología social e incluimos entrevistas a docentes y un sondeo entre estudiantes egresados. Los resultados, con toda seguridad, no son exclusivos de esta institución. Se aborda de manera crítica sin la intención de señalar personas o culpables, sino de proponer mejoras en procesos y métodos.
