| Descripción: | An introduction is presented on the importance of insects (particularly dung beetles), and the origin and importance of two major limitations for the studies on diversity: the Linnaean and Wallacean shortfalls. Afterwards, the most recent progress in the taxonomic and geographic knowledge of the genera 𝑂𝑛𝑡ℎ𝑜𝑝ℎ𝑎𝑔𝑢𝑠 Latreille, 1802 and 𝑃ℎ𝑎𝑛𝑎𝑒𝑢𝑠 MacLeay, 1819 are synthesized; and some unpublished ideas on the current lack of knowledge on the taxonomy and distribution of the genera are presented as a reference for future studies. Se presenta una introducción acerca de la importancia de los insectos (particularmente los escarabajos del estiércol), y del origen e importancia de dos limitaciones mayores para los estudios de biodiversidad: los déficits Linneano y Wallaceano. Posteriormente, se sintetizan los avances en el conocimiento taxonómico y geográfico más recientes sobre los géneros 𝑂𝑛𝑡ℎ𝑜𝑝ℎ𝑎𝑔𝑢𝑠 Latreille, 1802 y 𝑃ℎ𝑎𝑛𝑎𝑒𝑢𝑠 MacLeay, 1819; presentando también ideas inéditas sobre los vacíos actuales de conocimiento de la taxonomía y distribución de estos géneros, como una referencia para estudios futuros. |
