Title: | Dreamed Life of Deductive Arguments La vida soñada de los argumentos deductivos |
Publisher: | Quadripartita Ratio Quadripartita Ratio |
Description: | Abstract. Arguments can be classified according to the kind of inference they propose or according to the reason they adduce. In the first case arguments are classified as deductive, inductive, and so on, while in the second case many argumentation schemes are distinguished. I will try to show that these two classifications embody incompatible conceptions of the nature and function of argument. Finally, I will argue that if, as Wenzel says, the ultimate question in logical assessment is "Shall we accept this claim on the basis of the reasons put forward in support of it?", the inference-based classification of arguments is of limited interest for logic. |
