From a Lighting Company to an Electric Service Company: The CMGLE in Mexico City 1896-1905 The years between 1896 and 1905 are keys to understand the evolution of street lighting in México City. In this time, there was a transition from the use of gas, as fuel for lamps, to the use of electricity for them; and there occurred a change that passed from a monopoly to market competition in service. The Compañía Mexicana de Gas y Luz Eléctrica was a protagonist in this process.
