Title:	University ontology: from functions to essence Ontología universitaria: de las funciones a la esencia

Description:	The thesis behind this essay maintains that universities have historically been inertial institutions subjected to a hegemonic figure of power, and that one of the ways to combat this inertia lies in the strengthening of the university’s essence. In order to strengthen our thesis, we carried out a broad historical analysis that shows the relationship of dependence between the university and its hegemonic power figures. Subsequently, a philosophical distinction was made between the notions of function, purpose and essence, showing that they are not homologous concepts and that essence represents the main challenge for the universities of our time. Finally, some recommendations are outlined to turn the crisis into an opportunity for the creation of utopias and transformations.     La tesis de este ensayo sostiene que las universidades han sido históricamente instituciones inerciales, sujetas a una figura hegemónica de poder, y que una de las formas para combatir dicha inercialidad radica en el robustecimiento de la esencia universitaria. Con el propósito de fortalecer esta tesis, se realizó un amplio análisis histórico que retrata la relación de dependencia entre la universidad y sus figuras hegemónicas de poder. Posteriormente, se llevó a cabo una distinción filosófica entre las nociones de función, fin y esencia, demostrando que no son conceptos homólogos y que la esencia representa el principal desafío para las universidades de nuestro tiempo. Finalmente, se esbozan algunas recomendaciones para convertir la crisis en una coyuntura para la creación de utopías y transformaciones.
