Abstract: | Since London's 'The Great Smog' in the 1950's, there has been an mcrease m awareness of the harmful effects of bad air pollution in society (MOE, 2014). Approximately 4,000 deaths were attributed to the event and the government of the affected English capital, after establishing the roots of the cause, enacted the Clean Air Act in 1956 in order to combat the problem (MOE, 2014). Policies aimed at controlling emissions from industry and personal-use paved way for increased efforts globally, but interestingly, as the global urban population doubled - vehicle use increased; and so did air pollution levels (Brimblecombe, 2006). Today, there are more than 1.2 billion vehicles globally with estimates of 90% of air pollution in urban areas coming from these mobile sources (SEMADES, 2011; World Bank, 2013). |
