En las comunidades dedicadas a la producción de conocimiento algunos preguntan si se cumplió ese ideal, pues hoy los patrocinadores principales de la investigación son gobiernos y empresas, lo que hace difícil desvincular el trabajo científico de la acumulación de riqueza y del poder. Es un hecho el uso social de la ciencia con propósitos nocivos que ponen en riesgo a la especie. Nos propusimos averiguar si una muestra representativa de estudiantes universitarios de cinco carreras podía identificar y mencionar alguno de tales usos perniciosos sustentados en el conocimiento científico. ABSTRACT The original aim of scientific endeavor was to serve humankind. Nowadys, in knowledge communities, some wonder whether this ideal has been fulfilled or not. At a time when the main sponsors of research are governments and corporations, it seems impossible to separate scientific work from an environment prone to the accumulation of wealth and power. The social use of science for harmful uses that put the world population at risk is a daily occurrence. Our purpose was to find out if a sample of college students representing five careers could identify and mention some of said harmful applications sustained in scientific knowledge. |
