Description:	There are some cases in which there is persistent discussion about the acceptability of the application of "essentially contested concepts" (e.c.c), Eg. if a country is truly democratic, if something is really a work of art, if political violence between a government of a modern democracy and an armed group that disputes power is a civil war, etc. With respect to those cases, in this article my purpose is to argue in favor of the following theses or conclusions: The essentially contested uses of concepts (the e.c.c) belong to the genre of argumentative uses of concepts.   It is typical of the e.c.c that they are used to claim a status, exclusively.   III. Discussions around e.c.c are reasonable when they contribute to the construction of social reality.   These discussions are of interest to argumentation theory, first of all, because they can become persistent; secondly, because they do not dissolve when the participants recognize that they are making different uses of the same term or concept (See infra 3 and 4); and, thirdly, because its understanding contributes to the studies of argumentation with the elucidation of a type of discussions similar but different from those of persuasion, of a type in which discussions are about the application of a term or the use of a concept to categorize. Hay algunos casos en los que se discute persistentemente acerca de la aceptabilidad de la aplicación de “conceptos esencialmente polémicos” (c.e.p), Vgr. si un país es verdaderamente democrático, si algo es realmente una obra de arte, si la violencia política entre un gobierno de una democracia moderna y un grupo armado que le disputa el poder es una guerra civil, etc. Con respecto a esos casos, en este artículo  mi propósito es argumentar a favor de las siguientes tesis o conclusiones: Los usos esencialmente polémicos de conceptos (los c.e.p) pertenecen al género de los usos argumentativos de conceptos.   Es propio de los c.e.p que se empleen para reclamar un estatus, exclusivamente.   III. Las discusiones en torno a c.e.p son razonables cuando contribuyen a la construcción de la realidad social.   Estas discusiones son de interés para la teoría de la argumentación, en primer lugar, porque pueden llegar a ser persistentes; en segundo lugar, porque no se disuelven cuando los participantes reconocen que están haciendo usos distintos del mismo término o concepto (Ver infra 3 y 4); y, en tercer lugar, porque su comprensión contribuye a los estudios de la argumentación con la elucidación de un tipo de discusiones semejantes pero diferentes a las de persuasión, de un tipo en el que se trata acerca de la aplicación de un término o del uso de un concepto para categorizar.
