Descripción:	The article analyzes the concept of social policy within four methodological approaches. First, it is argued that the definition of social policy the semantic core of political concepts: the dialectics between constitutive and constituent powers. Secondly, given that concepts have a basic content that distinguished them from each other, the article proposes a minimum definition of social policy. Third, the article assesses 25 definitions derived from specialized literature in order to establish the essential attributes of the concept under research: the what, the who and the whys. Fourthly, a connotative definition of social policy is proposed. It is concluded that the connotations proposal is useful for research by means of including the methodological approaches analyzed in the article and by enabling the differentiation of social policy from other related terms, such as social protection, social security and social assistance. El artículo analiza el concepto de política social en cuatro planteamientos metodológicos. Primeramente, se argumenta que la definición de política social debe incorporar el núcleo semántico de los conceptos políticos: la dialéctica entre los poderes constituidos y los poderes constituyentes. En segundo lugar, postulando que los conceptos tienen un contenido básico que los distingue, se plantea una definición mínima de política social. En tercer lugar, se sistematizan 25 definiciones de la literatura especializada para asentar los atributos esenciales del concepto en estudio: el qué, el quién y los porqués. En cuarto lugar, se propone una definición connotativa de la política social. Se concluye que la propuesta de connotación puede ser de utilidad para la investigación al incluir los planteamientos metodológicos analizados y posibilitar la diferenciación de la política social con otros términos afines, tales como protección social, seguridad social y asistencia social.
